Autonomy empowers nurses in clinical and professional decisions

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, November 14, 2006

Autonomous nursing care is a hallmark of ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® organizations, in which staff nurses are accountable for practice that is guided by national nursing standards and their professional expertise based on education and experience. The organization and the department of nursing have a responsibility to staff nurses to provide appropriate educational opportunities so that staff nurses are practicing with confidence in their knowledge and abilities and within their legal scope of practice. Unit-based resources are essential for staff nurses so that they have current information available to them as they provide care to patients.

For example, staff nurses play a critical role in assessing and evaluating pain control measures for their patients. Members of the interdisciplinary team need the professional assessment information from the staff nurse to identify the correct analgesic and the most appropriate route, dosage, and interval to maximize pain control.
