The HIPAA privacy and security rules require your organization to adopt a variety of policies and procedures, conduct risk assessments, and secure the confidentiality of patients' protected health information (PHI). However, training staff and raising organizational awareness are as important as creating policies, because only the members of your work force can ensure that these provisions are effective.

Even after establishing reasons for your audience to care about security and providing them with examples of how they can help, the reality is that HIPAA security might not keep them on the edge of their seats.

Consider using the following reminders at your facility:

  • Messages on awareness gifts (e.g., pens, key fobs, Post-it® notes, notepads, first-aid kits, cleanup kits, diskettes, bookmarks, Frisbees, clocks, etc.)
  • Posters, checklists
  • Screensavers and warning banners/messages
  • Newsletters
  • In-person, instructor-led training sessions
  • Information security days or fairs
