Accelerated programs and Web-based programs are two of the ways nursing schools in Missouri are seeking to increase the output of nurses into healthcare jobs. Cox College and St. John's College of Nursing and Health Sciences at Southwest Baptist University, both in Springfield, MO, are hoping that the flexible training programs help curb the state's shortage.

At St. John's, one bachelor of science in nursing program is almost entirely online. Students go to campus only a few times each semester. At Cox, students who already have a bachelor's degree in another field can hop into an accelerated, 16-month program.

The number of nurses enrolled at both schools is already on the rise.
