CNE plays integral role in evidence-based practice

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, November 7, 2006

Evidence-based practice does not just happen because it is the right thing to do or because a nursing organization wants to seek ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®. It must be highly valued as the right way to provide healthcare and leadership while establishing a framework for safety and quality. For a nursing organization to be successful in evidence-based practice efforts, numerous essential supports and resources must be readily available.

The leadership and vision of the CNE are integral components to creating, advancing, and sustaining a practice environment grounded in evidence-based practice. The CNE provides leadership for the professional practice nursing environment within a healthcare organization. To create that environment, he or she establishes goals and objectives and allocates resources for the nursing organization in conjunction with the nursing leadership team. The CNE must believe in and provide support for the idea that evidence-based management and nursing practice serve as an essential framework for high-quality patient care. Without such a commitment to evidence-based practice by each member of the nursing leadership team, efforts to achieve success may be somewhat limited by that lack of support.
