Weekly Q&A: Demonstrate how weakness can become strength

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, October 31, 2006

This week, a reader asks how to use inefficiencies in the documentation submission to show positive changes. Read the response below from our advisor, Barbara L. O'Brien, RN, MSN, Cert., president, Magnetic HealthCare Strategies, LLC, Manchester, NJ.

Q: How can I use examples of ineffective management leadership to show growth and positive change in the documentation I submit for ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® designation?

A: When describing ineffective leadership in your documentation for Force 3: Management style, be sure to emphasize how resolving the situation resulted in a positive outcome for all involved. For example, if a staff member files a grievance against a manager who neglects to handle a human resources issue in a timely manner, the manager should be educated on how to handle the grievance and helped to resolve the situation to the satisfaction of the staff member. The positive outcome is that the staff nurse is satisfied with the manager's response to the grievance, and the manager is better prepared to handle future issues in a timelier manner. The manager and the staff member grow and develop throughout the process.

In your documentation, examples of ineffective leadership that created opportunities for positive change can include:

  • Nurse managers requested to explain variances in their budget without proper education
  • The need to quickly make a top-to-bottom decision due to significant budget shortfall
  • High turnover on a particular unit
