In the spotlight: Nursing newsletters tell all
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, October 31, 2006
There are numerous ways to communicate nursing activity across an organization, and the best means for your facility depends on organizational preferences and accessibility of the information to the majority of the staff. At Centra Health in Lynchburg, VA, Kelly Brown, RN, BSN, nurse educator, initiated a newsletter to communicate with her nursing division. Once the idea was shared with governance council members and nursing administration, a request was made to include every nursing division in the facility.
"The infectious enthusiasm of the self-motivated editor set off a cascade of events that has been expanded to include more information as each issue is planned," says Cindy Goodrich, RN, MSN, EdD, ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® coordinator at Centra Health. The newsletter-titled Nurses' Notes-is accessible online, but can easily be copied for distribution to staff by unit managers, if needed. Goodrich says the newsletter is "a one-stop option for sharing information about the professional practice environment across the nursing division."
Nurses' Notes is published quarterly and includes a section called "Shining Stars," a staff recognition piece to welcome new nurses and profile staff nurses who have achieved a degree, certification, or other professional accomplishment. The newsletter also features messages from the CEO, CNO, and the Magnet Recognition Program coordinator.
