Rhode Island Hospital is adding a new NICHE to the care it provides.

Recently, the hospital implemented an initiative called Nurses Improving Care to Health System Elders (NICHE) in an effort to improve the care it provides to geriatric patients. The program teaches staff to watch for symptoms typical of elderly patients including Alzheimer's, depression, malnutrition, and bed sores. About half of the patients admitted to the hospital each year are over the age of 65.

NICHE, which comprises tools and principles that help to transform hospital environments, is now in place at about 200 institutions across the United States, Canada, and the Netherlands.
