Commit to quality: Enhance the professional work environment
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, October 17, 2006
ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®-designated organizations earn this recognition in part because of their enhanced professional work environments. Professional work environments are committed to quality improvement, evidence-based practice, and quality patient care.
As part of building and sustaining your professional work environment, make sure nurses are incorporated into unit and organizational quality improvement committees, and provide nurses with continuing education, coaching, and role modeling in research and evidence-based practice. Identify expected outcomes with benchmarks for acceptable quality service, and conduct quality outcome measurements to determine your progress. Traditionally, quality improvement processes have been applied almost exclusively to improving patient care, but be sure to apply the same processes to improving your workplace culture and environment.
