Rewarding success and spreading the word
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, October 3, 2006
Recognition, reward, and celebration are key elements of the culture at Lehigh Valley Hospital (LVH) and Health Network in Allentown, PA, which received ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® redesignation last month. Kim S. Hitchings, MSN, RN, CNAA,BC, Magnet Recognition Program project director at LVH says, "We believe, as with anything you want to perpetuate, you must recognize, reward, and celebrate it."
The Professional Excellence Council at LVH determines approximately 40 annual awards in amounts from $500 to $2,500. "They review our Network's priorities and nursing vision statements and create awards that relate to associated key elements," Hitchings says. The awards are given each May, in association with Nurses Week. Grateful patients and their families, individual community members and private businesses, nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals donate award money, Hitchings says. Criteria for the awards are related to the Forces of Magnetism. Examples of 2006 awards include:
- The Search for Best Practice
- Clinical Research Nursing Award
- Clinical Leadership Award
- Excellence as a Preceptor
