Designated facilities nearing double digits in NC

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, October 3, 2006

Duke University Hospital (DUH) of Durham, NC, recently became the state's ninth facility to earn ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® designation. DUH is a 989-bed hospital that employs about 2,500 nurses. Professionals at DUH formed a Steering Committee in 2002 and an application committee in December 2004. The steering committee, consisting of approximately 170 multidisciplinary members, submitted the documentation on March 31, 2006. The documentation was written with the assistance of a team of 30 Forces of Magnetism co-chairs.

In early August, DUH welcomed five appraisers for a four-day site visit consisting of three open forums and two days of unit tours. Mary Ann Fuchs, RN, MSN, CNO and patient care services officer at DUH, says, "With the active engagement of bedside staff and through the leadership of nursing across DUH, we continue to strategically enhance a positive work environment via innovative initiatives that allow DUH to recruit and retain the best and the most expert nursing staff."
