Seeking to create leaders and empower its nurses, Shawnee Mission Medical Center in Shawnee Mission, KS, recently started its own Frontline Nursing Leadership Academy. About 50 nurses were chosen to participate in the program that will develop managerial skills, teach conflict resolution, and create nursing role models.

The four-semester program will consist of a thorough, intense classroom experience, followed by the presentation of practical projects by the participants. Administrators at the hospital hope, with a successful start from the first group, to select more nurses next year to continue the training.

Similar programs, including one for nurse managers at Baptist Memorial Health Care in Memphis, TN, have sprung up around the country over the past few years.
