Weekly Q&A: How to get started on the journey
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, September 26, 2006
This week, a reader seeks advice on getting started with the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® (MRP) journey. Read the response from our advisor, Gina Boring, BSN, RN, MRP project coordinator, Aultman Health Foundation, in Canton, OH.
Q: Our organization is in the beginning phases of the MRP journey. How can we get started?
A: One of the first things an organization should do when they decide to strive for designation is to designate a full-time MRP coordinator. Send the coordinator with the CNO or a VP to one of the MRP conferences offered. After attending the workshop, the coordinator should look at the organization and what it already has in place and then write a gap analysis to identify what it needs to do to achieve designation. This will give you specific direction.
If a shared decision-making structure is in place at the organization, consider its effectiveness. If the organization does not have such a structure, talk to a consultant or someone at another organization that can provide helpful advice. The coordinator can drive the shared decision-making process if it's just being created. Shared decision-making structures at the organizational level will provide the structure for communication and projects that the organization will need to engage in to move the MRP process forward. Remember that the journey takes time; it cannot be rushed.
