Techniques to promote nursing research

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, September 26, 2006

Under Force of Magnetism 6: Quality of care, organizations interested in pursuing ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® designation or redesignation must demonstrate that nursing research is integrated into nursing care. Many applicants struggle to spark staff-nurse involvement, but at St. Francis Medical Center in Trenton, NJ, Peg Nucero, RN, MSN, NPC, the facility's coordinator of nursing research, says "make it as simple as you can."

Over the past decade, Nucero has helped to create several programs and activities that have channeled nurse engagement in nursing research. St. Francis' nursing clinical ladder is an incentive for nurses to participate in research initiatives. "Research is one of the ladder's categories, and to reach the top level [i.e., level three], nurses need 20 points for the year," Nucero says. Nurses get different points for different research activities. "For example, if they engage in a discussion with me about research posters up on the units, they get one or two points," she says. "If they collect data for a research project, they get more," adds Nucero. At St. Francis, if nurses complete the clinical ladder up to level three each year, they earn $1,600.
