Conduct an unannounced mock site visit to prepare staff
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, September 26, 2006
To prepare staff for the site visit, consider conducting an unannounced mock site visit. To do this, a member of one of the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® teams should appear unexpectedly on nursing and nonnursing units/departments and perform brief inspections and interviews, looking at key issues on a predetermined checklist. These visits should include the day and evening shifts so that all staff are included.
Design the checklist so it can be used as a report card that you can forward to the department manager. Make sure it provides tips for the manager if there are issues that need clarification. If you grade the results, you could award a prize to the department that received the highest score on the mock surprise visit.
Remember, if you find issues that are not unit-specific, bring them back to the steering committee so that organizationwide solutions can be developed.
