Prepping champions for the site visit

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, September 19, 2006

To prepare ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® champions for the site visit, Barbara Wadsworth, RN, MSN, MBA, CNAA,BC, vice president/CNO, patient services at Abington Memorial Hospital in Abington, PA, held a full day event packed with useful activities. At the event, Wadsworth reviewed the facility's application so that the champions were familiar with the material and to help them understand how much the appraisers already knew.

Wadsworth and the champions developed talking points for all clinical units that contained highlights about each unit and any research or noteworthy qualities about it. The champions practiced introducing themselves to mock surveyors and discussed aspects of the hospital they could talk about while walking surveyors to different units. Wadsworth ended the day by giving champions an assignment to meet with their nurse manager and unit council members to design a tour of their unit. This would allow them to plan where to start and end ahead of time, ensuring the tour would end in front of a nice bulletin board rather than, for example, a restroom.
