There is often confusion between competencies and mandatory training required by regulatory agencies or institutional policy.
The difference between the mandatory training and competency validation is that the latter requires demonstration of the skill, whereas the former does not necessarily do so. To further clarify the difference, the list below outlines some of the common safety topics required by regulatory agencies:
- Cultural competence and ethical conduct
- Privacy and confidentiality issues (e.g., Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 [HIPAA] requirements)
- Fire safety
- Disaster preparedness
The focus on competencies is on what the individual can do, not what they know, and competencies must be measured in a simulated or clinical setting.
