Seeking a different way to combat the nursing shortage, Illinois Senator Richard Durbin is turning to the military. Recently, Durbin proposed a "Troops to Nurse Teachers" program, which is designed to entice nurses leaving the military to teach in the state.

The program could also find a home at the national level, as the United States Senate has agreed to allocate $500,000 to pay for the incentives to be offered in the program. Nurses leaving the military would agree to become teachers for a certain number of years in exchange for a scholarship.

The name for the program was derived from the successful "Troops to Teacher" program that brought service members into public schools in the 1990s.
