Weekly Q&A: Transforming the unsupportive to the supportive

This week, a reader seeks advice on motivating staff to support the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® (MRP) journey. Read the response below from our advisor, Dorothy Anne Garman, RN, MSN, MRP coordinator and coordinator of professional development and patient education at Newport (RI) Hospital.

Q: Can you give advice to convince staff that pursuing ANCC Magnet Recognition® is worth the journey and the efforts? Most are supportive, but what can I do about the staff that is not?

A: Many organizations have staff nurses who are not entirely convinced that MRP is worth all the hard work, dedication, and commitment that it takes to achieve ANCC Magnet Recognition®. To change their negative outlook, consider providing these staff nurses with the opportunity to meet with nursing staff from nearby designated hospitals. For example, have a nursing staff luncheon and invite a group of nurses from another designated hospital. They will have positive stories to share with the unmotivated staff nurses, as they have benefited from the journey first hand. This approach provides an informal setting for the unconvinced staff nurses to speak with nurses from a designated hospital and have peer-to-peer interaction.

For organizations that do not have the resource of a nearby MRP hospital, consider involving the nurses that are less motivated in the process of achieving designation. Look for their creative strengths and interests that may be applied toward designation. For example, those with an interest in photography could show their talent while capturing milestones in your journey. Others can join MRP committees. Becoming involved in the journey may improve their outlook on the prestigious designation.
