Preparation before the site visit

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, August 29, 2006

Once your documents receive a score in the "excellence" range and the ANCC's Magnet Recognition Program® appraisers arrive at your door for the most in-depth phase of the program's process-the site visit-your organization has the opportunity to take the evidence from your written documentation and showcase it in the flesh.

Prior to this site visit, promote designation awareness throughout the entire facility and prepare staff for issues that may come up during the site visit. For instance, physicians and other clinicians should be prepared to discuss why the staff nurses should be considered for this prestigious award. Clinicians must be able to give examples that demonstrate the excellent patient care outcomes that staff nurses deliver to their patients.

Staff nurses frequently ask what they should memorize for the site visit. They should not focus on memorizing information but rather should speak from their hearts about the care they provide, the contributions they make to improve patient care and outcomes, and the environment in which they work.
