Weekly Q&A: Protecting employees' rights and supporting a healthy work environment
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, August 15, 2006
This week, a reader wants to know how to show evidence in the written documentation for ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® (MRP) designation that the organization protects employee rights and supports a healthy work environment. Read the response below from our advisor, Gina Boring, BSN, RN, MRP project coordinator, Aultman Health Foundation, in Canton, OH.
Q: Do you have any suggestions for providing examples in the evidence of employee rights' protection and promoting a healthy work environment?
A: When providing examples of employee rights' protection, you can describe all behaviors that are categorized under a zero-tolerance policy, such as sexual harassment and threatening or discriminatory conduct. Provide a detailed account of your organization's complaint and grievance procedures, including written policies and how staff are informed of the process.
Educated employees foster a safe and healthy work environment, so examples of employee orientation programs, employee handbooks, safety fairs, newsletters, and posters are all ways to demonstrate dissemination of safety information to staff.
Healthy work environments can be exhibited through employee benefit packages. Providing immunizations for flu, varicella, and hepatitis B demonstrates a commitment to wellness. On-site health clubs, reimbursement for health club memberships, complimentary health screenings, and smoke-free environments also demonstrate the organization's pledge to improve employees' health.
