New York Senator Chuck Schumer wants to attack the nursing shortage from a different angle. Before worrying about bringing more nurses into hospitals, he wants to find more teachers to educate them.
In late June, Schumer proposed the "Bringing Back Nurses Act of 2006," which would offer retired nurses scholarships and stipends to get formal training that would allow them to impart their knowledge to aspiring nurses.
Faculty shortages are creating a problem throughout New York and the country, as eager, capable students are being turned away from colleges. A study by SUNY Albany, according to the Times Herald-Record, revealed that 80% of nurse-training programs in New York cited lack of faculty as the main reason for turning away applicants.
