People like to use their brains, so effective leaders encourage collaboration. This involves not simply telling your staff what you want done and how, but also encouraging them to come up with their own ways to accomplish projects or solve problems.

As part of encouraging collaboration and teamwork, it is imperative to celebrate success. This doesn't mean that you have to throw a party each time something goes well, but success should be noted. Let your staff know that their hard work, creativity, and collaboration have been noticed and appreciated. This recognition will make staff feel appreciated-a key factor in retention statistics.

Other ways to celebrate success and acknowledge collaboration include

  • sending a memo
  • making time to talk with staff and thank them individually
  • writing about success in the unit or department newsletter
  • talking about success in a staff meeting
