It's understandable if you are nervous when surveyors ask you a question-especially if it is about care that you or a coworker gave to a patient. The best way to respond is to simply talk about what you know. Be confident and help the surveyor understand why you do your job the way that you do.

Keep the following guidelines in mind when interacting with surveyors:

  • Begin with a clear understanding of what the surveyor wants to know, asking clarifying questions if necessary.
  • Talk about what you know.
  • Provide a general description of what you do and how you do it. Follow up with a specific example, if it's appropriate.
  • Teamwork is important. Demonstrate how you work with other staff toward continuously improving service to patients, the community, and fellow staff members.
