Banner Estrella Medical Center in Phoenix won't let its nurses go at it alone.

With the help of a new idea called team nursing, the center, which opened in January 2005, is hoping to extinguish the problem of nurse burnout. In team nursing, a registered nurse, a licensed practical nurse, and a chief nursing assistant join forces to treat a group of five or six patients.

One impetus for the change, The Arizona Republic points out, is the results of a 2002 study by the American Medical Association that says job dissatisfaction among hospital nurses was four times greater than the average for all U.S. workers. Also, the study noted, instances of high patient-to-nurse ratios resulted in greater emotional exhaustion.

The team nursing idea is still in its evaluation process, but workers at the center say that communication and patient care have improved.
