A group of nurses is just a call away-at any time of day or night-for patients in New Mexico, thanks to a free new service. NurseAdvice New Mexico, which was launched on June 1, consists of 21 nurses who answer healthcare questions and direct callers, if necessary, to resources in the community.

While the service is not intended to be a replacement for emergency care, the hope is that the number of ER visits will decline. According to the New Mexican, 549 calls were logged during the first week of service. As the numbers are expected to increase, so to will the number of nurses. The plan is to have about 40 or 50 nurses on call within the next three years.

The service, kicked off by a $500,000 grant from the New Mexico Department of Health, is available in both English and Spanish.
