South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside, NY, is hoping to help nurses from abroad find a home-literally. The hospital is shelling out $5 million to build 22 new 2-bedroom apartments that it will give to recruits below market price.
South Nassau is hoping affordable apartments in an area with a high cost of living will provide enough incentive for nurses-especially from places such as India and the Philippines-to sign on.
Nassau and Suffolk Counties have a higher vacancy rate for nursing positions (9.8) than the rest of the state (8.3), according to a study done by the Healthcare Association of New York State. Nationwide, the vacancy rate is 8%.
