Recruiters searching all over to combat shortage

The ever-present nursing shortage, along with a lack of affordable housing in the area, has forced hospital recruiters in Lee County (FL) to develop creative ways to find new employees.
Traveling has become commonplace, as recruiters are going as far as Ohio, Wisconsin, and Minnesota in hopes of finding good candidates. They are posting employments ads in those places and considering pop-up ads on various Web sites.
The goal of these efforts, at places such as Lehigh Regional Medical Center in Lehigh Acres, is to hire a large number of nurses in a short time. Thanks to sign-on and referral bonuses as high as $10,000, the hospital reached its goal of hiring 10 nurses over a two-week span in late May. In that time, 13 new nurses were hired, which helped reduce the rate of nurse vacancy at the hospital.
Construction on a new 420,000-square-foot facility, which is expected to open in 2008, will likely create an even stronger need for more nurses.
