Use evidence-based practice to support professional development

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, July 11, 2006

When making efforts to promote evidence-based practice and achieve ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® status, an organization also must address nursing staff professional development. Limiting professional development to a few continuing education programs on evidence-based practice may not be adequate. An organization also should provide opportunities for nurses to attend conferences or advance their education. Additional resources could include support for nurses to present papers at national or regional meetings. Designation is more than the 14 Forces of Magnetism-it reflects a synergy of efforts that relate to the Forces and a constant striving toward continual improvement of patient outcomes. To achieve designation and truly make evidence-based practice come alive, demonstrate evidence of synergy between those efforts. Evidence should serve patients, nurses, and the organization in the most effective manner possible.
