Nurses at New Jersey hospital strike

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, July 4, 2006

Nurses at ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®-designated Englewood Hospital and Medical Center went on strike last Thursday after contract talks regarding pensions failed. The 660 striking nurses are represented by the Health Professionals and Allied Employees (HPAE) union, which joined the approximately 300 nurses who picketed outside Englewood Hospital. The disagreement arose over the hospital's plans to change from a fully funded benefit pension, which is paid monthly and based on salary and years of employment, to a 401(k)-type savings plan. The hospital has proposed a two-tiered pension plan that would continue all current nurses in a defined benefit pension while enrolling all nurses hired after January 1, 2007, in a defined contribution plan. The hospital has brought in New Jersey-licensed registered nurses from a temporary agency to attend to patients' needs. Englewood Hospital received designation in 2002 and re-designation earlier this year.
