Hospitals across the country-with an eye toward competition-are making lavish changes to their patient services, turning their facilities into hotel-like operations.

Five hospitals in Montgomery (MD) County, for example, are in the process of making some innovative changes. Rooms at Montgomery General in Olney come with flat-screen TVs and CD players, while Shady Grove Adventist in Rockville offers valet parking before you enter a lobby filled with a coffee bar and a baby grand piano.

Patients at University of California, San Diego's Thornton Hospital in La Jolla can order meals, snacks, and desserts from room service whenever they want. The extensive menu, which will soon be available to patients' families, also lists carbohydrates so people with diabetes can watch what they eat.
