Involve physicians in nursing QI activities to increase their designation support
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, June 27, 2006
To help physicians understand what ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® designation is all about, nursing leadership at Inova Loudoun Hospital, a 155-bed facility in Leesbury, VA, involved them in quality improvement activities with nursing staff. "We assembled a group called physician ambassadors who participated on a quality improvement team with nurses, acting as champions of quality projects for the rest of the physician staff," says Lisa Dugan, MSN, RN, CNA,BC, director of emergency and pediatric services at the hospital. For example, one project involved the implementation of a central line bundle. Nurses and physicians worked together to implement it with much success, "helping physicians see that designation isn't just about PR and recognition, it's about what we do to get to that place," says Dugan. When the physician staff started seeing the work that nursing was doing, and becoming involved in it, they really started to comprehend what made a designation environment. "[The physicians understood that] not everything we do is perfect, but that we're creating a culture where professionalism, safety, and patient outcomes are in the forefront," Dugan says. Inova Loudoun Hospital earned designation.
