Excite staff on your journey with a nursing knowledge bowl
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, March 7, 2006
If you're looking for a creative way to educate and motivate staff-both nursing and organization-wide-about the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® journey, then here's an idea that may work well for you: a nursing knowledge bowl. This is a team game in the format of college bowl quiz games seen on TV since the 1960s. Be ready with a suitable prize for the winning team, such as a trophy modeled after the Super Bowl trophy. This game is suitable to be played as-is, even if your organization is pressed for time.
To begin the game, the host (think CNO) poses a question to both teams. The first team to buzz in (using bells or other noisemakers) has the opportunity to answer the question. A correct (or well-answered) response wins a point; an incorrect answer means the opposing team may attempt to answer. The host continues to ask questions until an agreed-upon time limit is reached or until the number of questions that constitute the game are asked. Consider using a chalkboard or dry-erase board to keep score.
