Weekly Q&A: The CNO's role in quality improvement
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, March 21, 2006
This week, a reader asks about evidence to demonstrate the CNO's role and accountability related to quality improvement. Read the response below from our advisor, Cheryl A. May, MBA, BSN, BA, director of nursing research and professional practice, Children's National Medical Center in Washington, DC.
Q: What type of evidence might I consider to demonstrate my CNO's role and accountability when it comes to quality improvement?
A: The role and accountability of the CNO is described in the letter of agreement for employment/contract and the position description. The performance evaluation instruments will demonstrate the accountability for quality improvement in the nursing department. In your documentation, consider providing the resources for an evidence-based nursing practice retreat held for staff and middle managers as an example of how a CNO may influence system-level change to improve quality of care.
