An online alternative to demographic data collection

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, March 21, 2006

When a few facilities in the Robert Wood Johnson Health Network-an affiliation of NJ-based healthcare organizations-became interested in pursuing ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® status, the network's nurse executive coordinating council identified a need to streamline the collection of nurse demographic data, says Lois M. Dornan, MSN, RN, CPHQ, director of clinical integration. To make the process less onerous, the council collaborated with an outside vendor to create StepOne©, an online system to collect and report the demographic data that is required by the ANCC for designation. Network member CentraState Medical Center in Freehold, NJ, used the Internet-based system to submit its data and achieved designation in December 2005. To implement the system, nurse educators learned StepOne© by using its intuitive screens and taught the nurse managers and the hospital's 479 RNs to enter demographic information in minutes, says Linda Geisler, RN, MNEd, CNAA,BC vice president of patient services at CentraState.
