GA healthcare system earns redesignation

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, March 21, 2006

Savannah-based St. Joseph's/Candler healthcare system, comprised of St. Joseph's Hospital and Candler Hospital, recently earned ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® redesignation. In 2002, St. Joseph's/Candler became the second organization in Georgia to achieve the honor, which it successfully maintained in February. According to a veteran staff RN, the organization offers incentives that promote growth and change, such as mentoring programs for new nurses and financial support to pursue higher education, that serve to excite staff about where they work. St. Joseph's/Candler also has a program for college students that familiarizes them with the organization, so they will be comfortable with the environment if they choose to work at St. Joseph's/Candler after graduation. Although these types of opportunities benefit nurses, it is patients who benefit most from designated environments, said a nursing official at the institution, as designation status represents "exceptional nursing care."
