Chicago rehabilitation hospital reflects on designation

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, March 28, 2006

Last year, the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) was the country's first independent rehabilitation organization to earn ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® designation. A nursing official at the facility said that prior to applying for designation, the facility recognized that it had many programs already in place to exemplify the expectations set for the Magnet Recognition Program®, including quality improvement projects and staff participation in community events. RIC also worked on new initiatives to align with the program, such as strengthening staff involvement in research projects and improving nurse-to-nurse communication. To keep all employees updated on the progress of their journey, the organization produced a monthly newsletter, Memos, detailing events taking place across multiple areas of the facility. Also, leaders posted stories of excellence on "nursing" boards located in each unit. RIC is one of 11 designated healthcare organizations in Illinois, eight of which are in the Chicago area.
