National news network touts hospitals for safe patient care
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, April 4, 2006
According to ABC News, more than two million people in the United States suffer hospital-acquired infections annually, and approximately 90,000 cases are fatal. The news source says that patients should take several precautions to protect themselves against such infection, citing suggestions from a book authored by two physicians, titled, YOU: The Smart Patient. Among the recommendations, the authors suggest that consumers investigate hospital ratings online to find information on diagnosis and treatment, the procedures that are performed, how patients fare after their procedures, and whether an organization has earned ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® designation. According to the authors, patients will find the highest quality of nursing care and employee morale in designated environments. The authors also encourage consumers to look for hospitals that are accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, those which employ full-time staff, and to insist that all hospital professionals and visitors wash their hands before coming into contact with patients.
