Hospital's 'lift team' pilot reduces RN injury
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, April 18, 2006
First-year results from Dayton, OH-based Miami Valley Hospital's (MVH) patient lift-team program indicate a 50% decrease in lower-back injuries among nurses. Additionally, nurses gained more than 800 hours of nursing staff time because they were no longer required to assist colleagues with ambulating patients. MVH launched the program in April 2004 with funding provided by Miami Valley Hospital Foundation. Initially, the lift team program was piloted on critical care and step-down units in the hospital, and it operated during day shift, when most injuries occurred. With the success of the initial pilot program, Miami Valley Hospital Foundation is expanding the program to second shift hospital-wide. The lift team consists of six men-although women can apply for a spot on the team-working in pairs who schedule time lifts at the start of their shifts each day. According to a nursing official, this program supports MVH's commitment to the health, well-being, and satisfaction of the nursing staff at this ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®-designated organization.
