Weekly Q&A: State requirements for CEUs
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, April 25, 2006
This week, a reader asks whether nurses' involvement in ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®-related projects and activities possibly meets requirements for state CEUs. Read the response below from our advisor, Suzanne C. Beyea RN, PhD, FAAN, director of nursing research, Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, Lebanon, NH.
Q: Can the time invested and work produced by nurses who actively participate in the pursuit of designation be submitted to meet requirements for state continuing education units (CEU)? If so, how would you recommend documenting the work and who should sign off? Should we seek pre-approval? Can you recommend a format to follow to provide the documentation?
A: Each state's board of nursing usually stipulates the requirements for demonstrating continuing competence. For example, for New Hampshire, this Web site www.nh.gov clearly specifies which types of programs count for CEUs and which programs don't. It is important to compare your designated-related activities to the requirements in the state in which your facility is located. Always try to work with an accredited provider of continuing education as their expertise is often helpful in sorting out the complexities of continuing education and contact hours.
