Hospital uses new communications technology to improve patient safety

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, April 25, 2006

Medical City Dallas (TX) Hospital, an ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® designated organization since December 2003, is the first hospital to deploy Emergin, Inc.'s Clinical Safety System, a new technology designed to improve patient safety and staff flexibility. Emergin integrated its Clinical Safety System with Medical City's existing nurse call system and patient monitoring technology. When a patient alarm goes off (e.g., from a heart monitor), the system sends a message to the appropriate nurse's mobile phone, usually with a screen shot from the patient's monitor, so that he or she may immediately respond, regardless of his or her location in the facility. If that nurse doesn't respond within three rings, the message rolls over to a secondary nurse, or someone designated by the nurse manager. The system also is designed to document this communication, which gives caregivers a greater sense of accountability, and has thus improved response times, according to a nursing executive.
