OH-based hospital first in Canton to earn designation

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, May 2, 2006

Aultman Hospital in Canton, OH, recently achieved ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® designation, becoming the only organization in the Akron-Canton area to earn this accolade from the ANCC. Recognized in part for its positive patient, staff, and workplace outcomes, the hospital reports that its average length of employment is approximately 14 years, and the annual nursing turnover rate is 6%, compared to a national average of about 18%. These statistics indicate that the hospital had many of the program's standards in place before initiating the application process, but that going through the process gave them an opportunity to identify areas for improvement, according to a nursing executive. The application process took approximately three years, and during three days in December, three appraisers surveyed the organization-documenting procedures, interviewing more than 1,000 staff and members of the community, and inspecting the facility, says the executive.
