Weekly Q&A: Evidence of professional development

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, May 9, 2006

This week, a reader asks for guidance on Force of Magnetism 14: Professional development. Read the response below from our advisor, Barbara Wadsworth, RN, MSN, MBA, CNAA,BC, vice president, patient services, Abington Memorial Hospital, Abington, PA.

Q: Can you offer guidance for organizations to approach the first source of evidence under Force 14, related to professional development programs and the policies and procedures that govern these practices?

A: Consider sharing human resource, administrative, and nursing policies. The narrative should illustrate the process for providing tuition reimbursement and the method used to determine employee eligibility. An overview of the educational processes available in the organization would also be effective here. Be sure to include facility-wide, departmental and unit-based education, as well as the various types of delivery methods. Including the educational session times and, if applicable, repetitive scheduling offered, will demonstrate support for nurses working various shifts throughout the week.

When documenting participation in local, national, or international conferences or meetings, consider poster presentations and speaking engagements in addition to an attendee list. If there are specific councils within your shared governance structure responsible for supporting nurses who present or attend conferences, or responsible for oversight of participation, their decision-making process(es) should be included. In your evidence, also include any types of scholarships available to nurses pertaining to these various educational activities. Supply the most recent history of participants who take advantage of opportunities for scholarship.
