Out of the box and in front of the camera: Infuse management meetings with fun, informative tactics
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, May 30, 2006
There's nothing wrong with having a little fun. That's the theory behind Rose Labriola's approach to management meetings at Frederick Memorial Hospital in Frederick, MD. As the senior vice president of patient care services, Labriola, EdD, RN, says that incorporating music, comedy, video, and dance into meetings serves to rejuvenate hospital leadership, and improve quality of care and nurse recruitment. For example, part of her meetings (i.e., "The Dr. Rose Show") include videos that she produces inhouse with the director of nursing financial operations depicting areas for improvement, such as staff recruitment and retention and emergency department efficiency. Nursing staff serve as actors in the videos.
Labriola's out-of-the-box communication methods are evidence of the engaging, motivational, and open environment that she's creating with the help of colleagues and staff. Since her arrival at the hospital in the fall of 2005, nurse vacancy rates have decreased from 14% to 4%. Hoping to earn ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® designation in the future, the staff nurses' entertaining participation in meetings is one way that executive leadership hears the voice of the staff nurse, in addition to satisfaction surveys and the development of a shared decision-making structure.
