Maine Medical Center is first designated acute-care facility in state

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, May 30, 2006

Earlier this month, Maine Medical Center-the largest hospital in the state-became the first ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®-designated acute-care hospital in Maine. According to hospital officials, Maine Med spent two years in the application process. Officials also say that this recognition as a center for professionalism and excellence will aid the hospital's recruitment and retention efforts. Currently, the nurse vacancy at the hospital is 1.5%, compared to a national average of 13%, but officials are concerned about upcoming nurse shortages due to an aging workforce. Some of the organization's 1,500 staff nurses say that the award is a significant morale-booster, considering morale had been weakened in 2000 when nurses attempted to unionize, according to the Portland Press Herald.
