Three focus factors for shared decision-making

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, June 6, 2006

The opportunity for nurses to participate in shared decision-making is an integral component of an autonomous practice environment. At Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, an ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® organization since 2000, shared governance has served as the model of decision-making for more than 15 years. For shared decision-making to be effective, nursing practice should be center stage. Here are three factors on which to focus as you implement your shared decision-making structure:

Ensure that nurses

  1. have the necessary resources to effectively practice
  2. feel that they have access to information necessary to make effective decisions
  3. have authority and accountability to carry out their decisions
