Three focus factors for shared decision-making
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, June 6, 2006
The opportunity for nurses to participate in shared decision-making is an integral component of an autonomous practice environment. At Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, an ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® organization since 2000, shared governance has served as the model of decision-making for more than 15 years. For shared decision-making to be effective, nursing practice should be center stage. Here are three factors on which to focus as you implement your shared decision-making structure:
Ensure that nurses
- have the necessary resources to effectively practice
- feel that they have access to information necessary to make effective decisions
- have authority and accountability to carry out their decisions
