Six steps for smooth nurse-sensitive quality indicator selection

At Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, nursing follows a six-step process to make the selection, tracking, analysis, and reporting of nurse-sensitive quality indicators smooth and effective. If your organization needs assistance starting this endeavor, consider implementing the six guidelines below, offered by SVMC:
- Keep it simple
- select meaningful indicators
- select indicators that can be measured
- Develop a template to track and report
- Identify collection process and frequency
- determine who and how often - Monitor consistency
- Analyze appropriateness and sensitivity
- Determine reporting structure to disseminate information
