Three tips for the project director to be a great leader

For ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® project directors, the responsibility for overseeing the Magnet Recognition Program® is no small task. Earning this level of nursing excellence is the result of a collaborative effort among a group of people who may never have worked together before-and the director is largely responsible for motivating and engaging these individuals to achieve this common goal. To make the most of this leadership role, consider the advice of best-selling author, contemporary philosopher, and corporate advisor John B. Izzo, PhD, founder of The Izzo Group, Ltd., a Canadian-based training and consulting firm. Dr. Izzo offered the following three ways that a leader can inspire others to greatness at the 2006 American Organization of Nurse Executives Annual Meeting & Exposition in April:
- Ask people what they think regularly. "Stop before telling people what to do. [Instead], ask what they think," Izzo says.
- Inspire people. Izzo's firm has heard many stories of leaders who dared to inspire individuals using techniques such as motivational slogans of the month or inspirational story time during meetings, he says.
- Walk around and ask good questions. "Leaders know that they should walk around [to be visible and accessible to staff], but that is only half the secret," Izzo says. "When you walk around, ask good questions-find out how the work is going for people, and what [they need] to be more effective. Listen to people," he adds.
