Weekly Q&A: Obtaining resources to support unit goals

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, June 20, 2006

This week, a reader asks how to identify and advocate for resources to support nurses' unit-based goals. Read the response below from our advisor, Barbara L. O'Brien, RN, MSN, Cert., president, Magnetic HealthCare Strategies, LLC, Manchester, NJ.

Q: What are some examples of ways that nurses can identify and advocate for resources to support their unit goals?

A: The CNE should have a system in place for the development and monitoring of organizational goals, focusing on unit-specific services within the nursing department. All levels of nursing should be represented on the approval body for goals, standards, policies, and procedures for nursing services. Here are several ideas to exemplify this:

  • Unit-based practice councils develop goals to meet organizational, nursing service, and nursing unit goals.
  • Nursing service develops strategies to meet organizational and nursing service goals.
  • The CNE represents all nursing in the development of organizational goals. In some institutions, directors and managers are part of the process.

Goals should be measurable and drive the organization and nursing to a higher level. Staff nurses usually are concerned with clinical practice and will relate more to goals that improve care at the bedside.
