Four must-have ideas to prepare staff for the site visit

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, June 20, 2006

Planning for the appraiser site visit might take on many different forms in ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®-applicant institutions. As Fox Chase Cancer Center (FCCC) in Philadelphia prepared for the site visit phase of its redesignation process, those involved in the designation initiative

  • identified unit champions to escort the surveyors around the units
  • prepared staff to engage with the surveyors by conducting mock surveys
  • incorporated topics-such as patient care, continuing education opportunities, performance improvement projects, staffing, shared governance, management style, orientation programs, and patient safety-into various preparation activities (e.g., the mock surveys)
  • emphasized to staff that the site visit was an opportunity to showcase exemplary projects (e.g., CNA development program)

FCCC successfully earned redesignation in September 2004.
