Designated hospital reduces mortality rate by 30% in IHI's 100,000 Lives Campaign

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, June 20, 2006

As a participant in the Institute for Healthcare Improvement's (IHI) 100,000 Lives Campaign, ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®-designated Southwestern Vermont Medical Center (SVMC) in Bennington reduced its mortality rate by 30%, and sustained the rate throughout the IHI's campaign period. SVMC achieved the reduction by undertaking all six of IHI's life-saving interventions, which only 33% of the more than 3,100 participating hospitals carried out. Hospital officials attribute the greatest results to two of the six measures: Implementing rapid response teams at the first sign of a patient's deteriorating condition, and following four steps to prevent ventilator-associated pneumonia (e.g., raising the head of a patient's bed between 30-40 degrees). SVMC was able to reduce its pneumonia rate by 78% during the 18-month campaign by following the four-step process. The IHI designated SVMC one of 100 "mentor hospitals" to honor its significant reduction in mortality rates.
